On February 24 and 25, 2022, community members from over 20 Kenosha-area organizations participated in the first installment of Building Unity in CommUNITY: Kenosha’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Educational Series. The series is presented by United Way of Kenosha County in partnership with The Mary Lou & Arthur F. Mahone Fund, Herzing University, and Snap-on Incorporated.
During the two-day workshop, participants focused on learning commonly used terminology, historical materials, and practical techniques for utilizing course information and materials in the workplace and throughout the community. Roger Moreano, founder of Bridges 4 Justice, and Jasmin M. Robinson, founder and CEO of I.D.E.A.L. Education, LLC, facilitated the workshop.
Participant and community member, Mitch Ferraro, stated the following about his experience:
“The Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Training through the United Way of Kenosha County was such an amazing experience. In the two-day training so much was touched on about discrimination that is alive and real, not only all over the world, but in our very own community. It also showed me some of this history we haven't been told and how discrimination in our society is so systemic. Both trainers were extremely knowledgeable and did a great job facilitating an open and safe space for these difficult conversations.
This training was very eye opening, thought provoking, and emotional. All while instilling me with encouragement and hope. It showed me how many people care and are working hard for equity and inclusion in OUR community. It also provided me with tools that now help me be uncomfortable with the tough uncomfortable conversations we must have around EDI. Thank you to Carolynn Friesch and Tamarra Coleman for putting this together and giving me the opportunity to attend.”
United Way of Kenosha County recognizes Tamarra Coleman, executive director for The Shalom Center, for her leadership, time, and assistance which ensured the successful launch of Building Unity in CommUNITY. For more information on the series, please visit our website.
