Income Tax Assistance Results in $1.2 Million in Refunds
On behalf of the Kenosha County Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Coalition, the United Way of Kenosha County, Carthage College and the Kenosha County Job Center would like to thank everyone who participated in the VITA program this tax season.
Every year, the VITA Program offers free tax help to low- to moderate-income (generally, $49,000 and below) individuals and families throughout Kenosha County who need assistance preparing their tax returns. Trained volunteers assist taxpayers in completing and e-filing their returns and receiving tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a commonly-overlooked credit that may add more than a month’s worth of salary to annual income.
During this year’s tax season, 72 certified volunteers prepared 862 state and federal tax returns resulting in over $1.2 million dollars worth of refunds. For every dollar spent in the Kenosha County VITA program, $62.92 was received back into our community to help financially boost hard working families in a recovering economy. In addition, Guaranty Bank is thanked for providing financial literacy and asset building services during each of the VITA sessions.
The Kenosha County VITA Coalition looks forward to bringing this program back to our community next tax year. VITA locations are at the Kenosha County Job Center and the Salem Community Library. Additional sites west of I-94 are being studied for implementation.
